Welcome to Ottawa

From June 13 to 16 2009, the University of Ottawa has the pleasure of welcoming you to Ottawa, Ontario for the 66th annual CAUBO Conference.

Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, the University of Ottawa is North America's largest bilingual university and one of Canada's top research-intensive universities. With more than 360 undergraduate programs and nearly 120 graduate programs available in 10 faculties, uOttawa promotes academic excellence and is a centre of innovation. The University is a vibrant, cosmopolitan and diversified community with over 36,000 students originating from over 150 countries. The University of Ottawa is Canada’s university.

Nestled at the junction of three picturesque rivers, Ottawa is considered one of the world’s most beautiful capitals. The city also borders the province of Québec, creating a dynamic cultural milieu in which both French and English cultures are deeply rooted. The result is a truly cosmopolitan experience—a North American city with a distinctly European charm and flair. The city provides the perfect venue for this year’s conference theme: Embracing Cultures.

CAUBO 2009 will begin with our keynote speaker, Lyn Heward who is the former Creative Director for Le Cirque du Soleil, one the most innovative companies in the world. Lyn draws on her unparalleled experience to show you how to make creativity a part of everything you do. As President and COO of Cirque du Soleil's Creative Content Division, Lyn helped guide their masterworks Varekai, Zumanity and KA. She is now the organization’s Executive Producer for Special Projects. Lyn is also a member of the creative team of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Organizing Committee and the author of the critically acclaimed book The Spark: Igniting the Creative Fire That Lives Within Us All.

Robert Prichard, the current President and CEO of Torstar Corporation, Vice Chair of Canada's Science, Technology and Innovation Council, and President Emeritus of the University of Toronto, will launch the conference with his views on the role of administrators during these difficult times.  Drawing from his extensive leadership experience in both the university and private sectors, he will challenge you to think about your role in the institution and the unique demands that are made of university leaders.   David Arkless, President of Corporate and Government Affairs of Global Corporate Affairs of Manpower Inc., will discuss the implications surrounding the recruitment and retention of qualified employees in a global context while Timothy Lane, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada will round out the plenary sessions with a discussion on the state of the economy.

Most of the CAUBO 2009 activities will take place at The Westin Ottawa where we have a large block of guestrooms. The Westin Ottawa is located in the heart of Ottawa on the famous Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with stunning views of Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market. It is an environment that is sure to inspire.

In addition to the conference’s professional activities, the social activities planned for this year's conference will focus on providing you with the opportunity to enjoy Canada’s Capital Region. The optional events will be held on the University of Ottawa’s campus and are sure to delight with spectacular regional cuisine and ample occasions to network and enjoy a glass of wine with colleagues. The Farewell evening will take place at Major’s Hill Park – one of the most notable parks in downtown Ottawa. The park provides stunning views of the Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River, the National Gallery of Canada, the United States embassy, the ByWard Market and the historic Château Laurier hotel.
