With a focus on academic personnel, the 2010 program will cover the following:
- University Governance and negotiating with academic personnel
- Process of negotiation and dimensions of bargaining
- Handling conflict
- Preparing for bargaining, selecting a team, and bargaining protocols
- Strategies of negotiation
- Communicating effectively, including drafting effective contract language
- Negotiation resources

A new Guide for Collective Bargaining with Academic Personnel will be one of the resources for the program. There will be three team negotiation case study exercises, including a case involving teaching and research assistants. A number of the sessions involving teams are interdependent. It is therefore important that those attending are present for the full program.
The Training Session is of interest to those who have recently been appointed to deal with academic labour issues and to teams entering bargaining. The session is also an excellent opportunity for negotiating teams to work together.
The cost is $1,500, which covers the training, materials, accommodations and meals. Once a member has registered for the Training Session, enrolment is considered confirmed. If there is a change in plans, a colleague may be substituted. If a substitution cannot be found, FBS will make every effort to re-sell the spot. In the event that FBS is unable to fill the position, the registration fee will be refunded less the expenses incurred by FBS for the guestroom and food and beverage expenses at the Delta Meadowvale.
The registration link will be available on September 3, 2010. For registration inquiries, please contact Chantal Charette at (613-230-6760 x337) or “e” mail ccharette@caubo.ca. For information about the Training Session Program, please contact Brian Fijal (bfijal@mts.net) or Sharon Cochran (scochran@caubo.ca).
