Canadian universities face significant issues related to facilities, including but not limited to things like deferred maintenance, escalating construction costs, shortage of trades, environmental protection, energy conservation, rising laboratory costs and risks, and physical environment as an element of student recruitment and retention. Although our universities are well served by regional APPA groups, there are a number of issues which require a national perspective for which there was until now no forum.
The Core Facilities Data Survey which CAUBO sponsored for a second year in 2004-05, in partnership with APPA, attracted 38 participating universities across Canada. This demonstrates the need and desire for more benchmarking information and for more precise data to argue the case for more deferred maintenance funding. Such surveys require the dedication of subject matter experts to ensure consistency in reporting and informed analysis. The oversight and longterm development of this important tool will be assumed by the National Facilities Management Committee.
In addition to the oversight of the annual survey, the National Committee will promote greater sharing of information and expertise among facilities managers across Canadian universities, will identify areas of current or emerging importance where collective action may be beneficial, and will participate in the development of the CAUBO Annual Conference and Pre-conference programs.
