New Resource Available: Quebec Financial Landscape

CAUBO has developed a series of financial landscapes focusing on critical areas within Canadian universities. Through the Landscape series, financial trends in higher education are explored at the national, provincial, and institutional levels.

The Provincial Landscapes provide insight into the significant differences in university funding models between provinces, as identified and explored through CAUBO’s data-rich analytical tools and resources, and support a data-driven approach to assessing institutional finances.

An updated Quebec landscape is now available for members. The 2023 Quebec landscape, initially released in 2021, has been updated and expanded with new insights into key financial trends.

Overall, the landscape highlights the significant differences in Quebec university income trends compared to other provinces, and demonstrates how university priorities have shifted to respond to changing societal expectations, impacting cost pressures and leading to notable variations in spending patterns between provinces. Recent announcements by governments regarding a cap on international student permits and international tuition fees will significantly impact international student enrolment (and domestic out-of-province enrolments in Quebec) and result in considerable financial pressures at some institutions.

Financial landscapes are also available for Nova Scotia, Ontario, and British Columbia.

The provincial landscapes will become regional landscapes to capture trends in more provinces. Stay tuned for the regional landscape that will provide insight into the trends in your region.

Institutional Financial Landscapes

To build on the information provided in the National and Provincial Landscapes, CAUBO offers members an Institutional Landscape service. For a nominal fee, members can receive a financial landscape that highlights the unique financial trends and situation specific to their institution.

Institutional landscapes provide an overview of the key components of an institution’s finances as compared to peer institutions, as well as national or provincial trends. Institutions can customize their peer comparator group based on several criteria.

CAUBO continues to work on developing resources that will help members achieve their objectives.
